Description

“For over 2 decades, I have integrated storytelling and creative expression into my teaching across South America, Southeast Asia, and beyond. Initially hired as a TEFL teacher, I often told schools that they were getting two for the price of one: an educator and a professional artist. Drawing on this dual role, in 2018–2019 I coordinated a two-week volunteer program in Sri Lanka for pre-graduate students from mainland China. Many arrived shy, glued to their phones, and uncertain about one another. While their program focused on English teaching or working with rescued turtles, I spontaneously introduced a storytelling and art workshop. Within two days, students were actively collaborating, creating, and illustrating stories inspired by the turtles’ journeys, returning home with new friendships, enhanced confidence, and a rediscovered sense of play and imagination. Across all these experiences, I have witnessed how storytelling and art can unlock creativity, build connection, and foster personal growth in diverse, multicultural groups.”

About the Host

Alann De Vuyst is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and educator whose work spans more than three decades across continents. Beginning his career as an English teacher, he later taught academic writing at university level, blending language with creative expression. Alongside education, he has exhibited paintings, digital art, and illustrations worldwide, from Europe and Asia to South America. His upcoming children’s book, which he both wrote and illustrated, draws on years of storytelling through images and words.
Alann’s artistic journey is deeply tied to his travels and encounters with indigenous communities in South America and Asia. Living among tribes, documenting oral traditions, and creating videos long before the age of social media, he has explored the intersection of culture, spirituality, and creativity. His work—whether on canvas, in print, or through workshops—aims to connect people, preserve traditions, and inspire new ways of seeing the world.
