Description
Are you curious why sometimes we make the worst decisions against our best intentions?
In our daily lives and careers, cognitive biases often lead to irrational decisions, impacting productivity and success, particularly in the field of engineering.
Imagine a team of engineers on a high-stakes project. Early on, the leader starts off with complaints about tight deadlines and insufficient resources. This negativity sets a tone, prompting the team to also express doubts. Predictably, this collective pessimism results in poor performance, confirming the initial fears… You wonder, how did we end up here?
Various cognitive biases, such as the self-fulfilling prophecy, influence our decision-making processes. Understanding these biases is crucial to mitigating their effects and fostering a more productive work environment.
We will explore how to recognize and combat cognitive biases such as:
Accessibility Principle: Making decisions based on readily available information.
Correspondence Bias: Attributing behavior to personal traits rather than situational factors.
Primacy Effect: Early information impacting long-term perceptions.
Perseverance Bias: Sticking to initial impressions despite disconfirming evidence.
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Expectations influencing our behaviours, that later confirm those expectations.
Through theoretical insights, real-world engineering examples, and practical advice, you will be equipped with strategies to identify and counteract these biases.
Consider how often your initial impressions shape your long-term judgments. Reflect on a recent project – were there moments where cognitive biases might have influenced outcomes? By understanding and addressing these biases, you can lead your team to more rational, objective, and effective decision-making.
Join us for a series of insightful webinars where you’ll learn how to switch off your cognitive autopilot and take control of your decision-making processes. Enhance your skills to boost your engineering career by understanding and overcoming the biases that often lead us astray.

About the Host
Hi, I’m Erika Albert — engineer, leadership mentor, and clinical psychology student. My career began in engineering, where I spent nearly two decades in technical and leadership roles. Yet my lifelong fascination with the human mind eventually brought me back to academia to study psychology. Today, I combine these two worlds — using both technical expertise and psychological insight to help engineers grow not just as professionals, but as leaders. My mission is to bridge the gap between technical mastery and effective leadership in engineering.
