Understanding a few visual principles (weights of colours and shapes, symmetry, space) allows one to compose appealing paintings with minimal means. The idea is to give a short presentation of these 'rules' along with some art history examples, and then to supply all the materials needed and to help each participant create a simple geometric painting. They will most certainly be impressed with what they create, and also have some new facts to talk about at the next dinner party. I have put together a collection of simple paintings that are easy to explain and recreate, and would use one of these for each workshop. As mentioned, the colour palette will be specific to the individual. For that I will bring finished paints, and help them choose complimentary colours.
