Workshop

Description

Images are never neutral.

From royal portraits and religious paintings to advertising campaigns and social media, visual culture influences how we understand power, identity, leadership, belonging and social values.

Using artworks from different periods, participants explore how images communicate ideas, shape collective narratives and influence the way we see ourselves and others.

Through discussion, image analysis and collaborative activities, participants gain practical tools for understanding visual communication and navigating an increasingly image-driven world. Each participant receives a custom-designed activity booklet to support observation, reflection, discussion and personal discoveries throughout the session.

About the Host

Jeanne Couaillier is a French art lecturer and creative workshop facilitator based in Lisbon. She studied art and design in Paris at Panthéon-Sorbonne University, École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré and École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. Her early career combined several creative fields: she designed textiles for haute couture while living in Switzerland, worked with several haute-couture companies, produced for interior design magazines, and created costumes for dance companies and productions at the Comédie-Française. She was also laureate of an international landscape design competition. After ten years of teaching in France, she began developing art talks and workshops while living abroad. In China, she also gave lectures for fellow teachers on integrating art history into different disciplines. She later continued this work in Shanghai and Bangkok, offering accessible art talks and creative workshops for international audiences. Since moving to Lisbon in 2023, she has been developing art history talks and workshops in English and French for adults and children, collaborating with cultural venues, galleries and schools.
