Description

A music therapy workshop series invites participants to explore the experience of uncertainty in life, the comfort of predictability, and what it feels like to let go of control, through the lens of indeterminate and chance-based music.

Participants will engage in a multi-layered experience that combines:

  • Education: learning about influential composers (Cage, Reich, Feldman, Cardew, Oliveros) and the styles and philosophies behind indeterminate, process-based, and chance music
  • Music creation: active music making, improvisation, graphic score composition, field recordings and sound experiments
  • Performance and collaboration: sharing individual creations, performing group compositions, and reflecting on the collective musical experience
  • Therapeutic exploration: processing personal experiences, emotions, and responses to uncertainty, both in music and in life

Each session is designed to balance group experiences—performing, improvising, sharing—with individual exploration, including take-home exercises that can be brought back to the group for discussion and reflection.

Benefits

This music therapy workshop series offers participants a supportive and creative space to explore uncertainty, structure, and the experience of letting go of control using indeterminate and chance-based music as both a creative and therapeutic lens. This is open to participants with no music experience, just a willingness to learn.

Through guided listening, discussion, and hands-on creation, participants are introduced to influential composers such as John Cage, Steve Reich, Morton Feldman, Cornelius Cardew, and Pauline Oliveros, gaining insight into artistic approaches that embrace process, unpredictability, and deep listening. These ideas are then translated into lived experience through active music-making, improvisation, graphic score creation, field recordings, and collaborative sound experiments.

Participants benefit from opportunities to share and perform their own work, engage in collective compositions, and reflect on how group dynamics, choice, and unpredictability unfold in real time. The workshop supports emotional awareness and self-reflection, helping participants notice how uncertainty is experienced in the body, in relationships, and in everyday life. This offering:

  • Builds trust, cohesion, and team connection
Shared music-making and collaborative composition create a sense of psychological safety, encouraging participants to listen, respond, and co-create—strengthening group bonds and interpersonal awareness.

  • Reduces stress and supports nervous system regulation
Guided listening, mindful sound exploration, and structured improvisation promote relaxation, grounding, and emotional regulation, helping participants reset and recharge.

  • Strengthens adaptability and resilience in uncertainty
Working with indeterminate and chance-based music supports greater tolerance for ambiguity, flexibility in thinking, and confidence in navigating the unknown—skills that translate directly to everyday life and work.

  • Enhances creativity and intrinsic motivation
Participants are encouraged to explore curiosity, play, and experimentation without pressure to perform, reigniting creative confidence and motivation.

  • Improves emotional awareness, empathy, and perspective-taking
Reflecting on personal and collective musical experiences deepens self-understanding and empathy for others’ responses, fostering compassion and appreciation of neurodiverse ways of thinking and communicating.

  • Increases engagement and sense of agency
Balancing individual choice with group structure empowers participants to contribute in ways that feel authentic, reinforcing confidence, autonomy, and meaningful participation.

  • Supports overall mental well-being and self-compassion
Therapeutic processing connects musical experiences to real-life emotions and patterns, helping participants develop kinder, more sustainable relationships with control, uncertainty, and self-expression.
