Speak So People Listen

Description
Good speaking isn’t about becoming louder, more polished or more “presenter-like”. It’s about connecting with an audience and making what you say easy to follow, engaging and worth listening to.

This practical, highly participatory session explores the tools that make spoken communication work: intention, pace, emphasis, vocal variety, audience connection, physical presence and confidence. Participants will experiment, practise and receive constructive feedback in a supportive environment.

Drawing on techniques from professional communication, voiceover and performance, the session helps people develop a speaking style that feels natural rather than scripted — while becoming clearer, more confident and more influential.

Suitable for people who present, lead meetings, brief colleagues, speak at events or simply want to communicate with greater impact.

Communicating the Complex

Description
Complex information doesn’t have to sound complicated.

This practical session helps participants turn dense, technical or nuanced material into communication that people can understand, remember and act on — without oversimplifying the substance.

Participants explore how to identify the real message, understand what an audience actually needs to know, structure information clearly, remove unnecessary complexity and use examples, analogy, story and plain language effectively.

The session draws on Jay’s decades of experience communicating complex policy, political and strategic issues to very different audiences, from senior decision-makers to the general public.

Ideal for people working in government, policy, professional services, technical fields or any role where expertise needs to travel beyond the experts.

Psychosocial Safety at Work: A Lived Experience Perspective

Description
Psychosocial hazards are now firmly part of the workplace health and safety conversation. But policies, frameworks and risk registers can only tell us part of the story.

This session brings a lived-experience perspective to psychosocial safety at work: what workplace psychological injury can actually look and feel like, how harm can accumulate, what recovery involves, and how organisational responses can either support recovery or make an already difficult situation worse.

Jay draws on her own experience of workplace psychosocial injury and PTSD, alongside a long career inside complex government and political organisations.

This is not WHS compliance training. It is a candid, practical and human conversation designed to help leaders and teams better understand the people behind the terminology — and think more deeply about prevention, support and recovery.

Ready for Anything: Communicating on Your Feet

Description
You can prepare the presentation. You can rehearse the talking points. You cannot prepare every question, interruption, awkward silence, difficult conversation or unexpected turn.

This energetic, practical session uses techniques drawn from improvisation, performance and professional communication to help participants become more comfortable thinking and communicating in the moment.

Through accessible exercises — no comedy performance required — participants practise listening closely, responding rather than retreating into a script, building on other people’s ideas, handling uncertainty and communicating with confidence when they don’t have the perfect answer prepared.

The aim isn’t to become brilliant at improvisation. It’s to become more adaptable, present and influential in the conversations that actually happen at work — including the ones nobody warned you about.

About the Host

I’m a Canberra-based speaker, facilitator, presenter and voice artist with a background that spans professional communication, government, diplomacy, intelligence, performance and the creative arts.

After more than two decades working in roles where communicating complex ideas clearly really mattered, I now use those skills in a much more eclectic portfolio career. I run practical workshops and one-to-one sessions in voice, presentation, audio and creative communication; speak about mental health, psychosocial safety and lived experience; facilitate and MC events; and work with creative organisations on marketing and audience engagement.

My approach is practical, warm and highly participatory. I’m interested in helping people communicate with greater confidence and clarity — whether that means speaking to a room, finding a more natural and engaging voice, handling difficult material, or getting an idea out of their head and into the world.

I’m also an active performer, including improv theatre and choral performance, and I bring that willingness to experiment, play and respond to the room into my facilitation work.
