Description

Corporate environments are extraordinarily good at producing focused, efficient thinking, and at quietly closing down everything else. Under sustained performance pressure, the brain's analytical executive system dominates, progressively suppressing the Default Mode Network: the neural system responsible for imagination, associative thinking, and genuine social perception. Teams stop surprising themselves. Communication becomes transactional. The same problems get solved the same way.

Rewired is a half-day art therapy-based workshop that directly reopens that closed circuit. Grounded in peer-reviewed neuroscience- including Beaty et al. (2016) and Luchini et al. (Cerebral Cortex, 2025), which provide causal evidence that coupling the brain's imaginative and executive networks enhances creative performance- the session uses a single shared canvas and a structured rotation method to create the exact conditions under which that coupling occurs.

Participants are guided through four progressive stages using drawing, ink, paint, and mixed media. No artistic experience required. All materials supplied.

Session Structure

Stage 1 — Arrival (20 min)
Participants enter a space already set with materials and are invited to handle them freely — no instructions, no introduction. A deliberate sensory interruption of the task-oriented, evaluative mode most people carry into a room.

Stage 2 — Individual Section (10 min)
One large canvas spans the full table, divided into one section per participant. Using their non-dominant hand, each person responds to a single prompt- how does your role feel right now — through abstract mark-making only. No words, no planning, no right answer.

Stage 3 — The Rotation (3 rounds × 10–15 min)
Participants rotate along the canvas three times, each time moving to the section worked on by a colleague- responding to what they find rather than planning what to add. By the final round, every hand has moved across every section. The result is one large collective artwork that no individual designed and everyone made.

Letting go of your section, watching someone work over what you made, then doing the same to someone else, is not comfortable. That discomfort is the session's core mechanism: the precise moment the controlling brain meets its own edge and, with the right conditions, releases. Research shows this is when the imaginative network comes back online. Teams consistently find that once they stop defending their section, something opens- in the work and in how they relate to each other.

Stage 4 — Debrief and Transfer (45 min)
Facilitated group reflection connecting what happened on the canvas to real team dynamics- who held on, who let go, whose contribution shifted the whole. Each participant identifies one pattern they brought to the canvas that they also bring to the meeting room, and leaves with one concrete observation about a colleague they had not previously seen.

Benefits

Benefits for Teams

— Interrupts tunnel vision and reactivates associative, generative thinking
— Builds genuine capacity to receive and build on a colleague's ideas rather than replace them
— Creates a shared team experience of productive uncertainty — the mental state in which real collaboration occurs
— Surfaces live group dynamics in a non-threatening, non-verbal context
— Produces a single collective artwork as a permanent record of what the group made together
— A shared reference point the team can return to: what it felt like when the room stopped competing and started making together
