Description

Most organisations understand that creativity matters. Far fewer understand why it keeps disappearing, or what is actually required to bring it back.

The Unfinished Mind is a keynote by Arzu Meily: visual artist, registered art therapist, and author, with over fifteen years of practice across studios, clinical spaces, and professional contexts on five continents. The talk is built around a single concept 'creative permeability' and the research-grounded case for why it is the cognitive capacity most needed in professional life right now, and most consistently undermined by the environments professional life creates.

It is a precise, evidence-based argument delivered by someone who has spent fifteen years observing, from the inside, how creative thinking closes down and what it takes to reopen it. Not a motivational talk. Not a creativity masterclass. A keynote that gives its audience something they can actually use: a framework, a language, and -in the extended format - a direct, personal encounter with the shift it describes. Every attendee receives a copy of the book.

The Talk

The keynote moves through four connected ideas:

1 — The Closing
How we learned, gradually and without noticing, to stop wondering. The research behind the measurable collapse of creative thinking between childhood and adulthood - George Land's NASA study, Kyung-Hee Kim's meta-analyses - and what it reveals about the institutional structures through which almost every professional in the room has passed. This is not a sentimental observation. It is a finding with direct implications for how organisations think, collaborate, and adapt.

2 — The Cost of Certainty
What the over-optimised mind actually costs - in creative quality, in relational depth, in the capacity to make sound decisions under genuine uncertainty. Drawing on Teresa Amabile's four decades of Harvard research on how evaluation cultures shift the brain from expansive to contractive cognition, and on Iain McGilchrist's synthesis of hemispheric research, this section names what high-performance environments are quietly trading away - and why the trade is no longer sustainable.

3 — What Creative Permeability Actually Is
Not a soft skill. Not openness as a personality trait. Not creativity in the popular sense. Creative permeability is the structural capacity of a well-formed, internally coherent mind to engage with new experience without immediately assimilating it to what is already known -to hold something unfamiliar in genuine suspension long enough for real encounter to occur. This section defines it precisely, distinguishes it from related concepts, and explains why it is both trainable and measurable.

4 — The Return
The evidence that what was closed is not gone. The specific conditions -neurological, environmental, relational - under which creative permeability returns. And what it looks and feels like when it does: in individuals, in teams, and in the quality of work that becomes possible when a room full of people stops performing intelligence and starts actually using it.

The Interactive Closing — 90-Minute Format

In the extended format, the keynote is followed by a 20–25 minute live interactive experience in which audience members participate in two brief, structured activities directly from Arzu's workshop practice. The interactive closing transforms the keynote from a talk people remember into an experience they carry with them. It is the most commonly requested element by event organisers who have seen Arzu speak before.

The Book

Every attendee receives a personal copy of The Unfinished Mind included in the keynote fee.

The book extends the keynote's argument across ten chapters, offering both the conceptual framework and a set of practical approaches for developing creative permeability as a daily practice. It functions as a lasting post-event touchpoint: something participants return to, share with colleagues, and reference in the weeks and months that follow. For organisations, it also creates a shared intellectual common ground across the team- a language for the ideas the keynote introduced.

Benefits

— A precisely articulated, evidence-based understanding of why creative thinking diminishes in professional environments - and what can be done about it
— A personal encounter with the cognitive shift the keynote describes - felt, not just heard, in the interactive format
— A copy of The Unfinished Mind for continued engagement with the framework
— A shared language and reference point across the team or audience
— In the half-day format: a direct, embodied practice for developing creative permeability independently
